Our mission is to stabilize homeownership for lower-income Marylanders.
A brief history
Since 1981, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service has provided pro bono legal services to lower-income Marylanders. We launched the "My Home, My Deed, My Legacy" project in 2019 to provide opportunities for housing stabilization and wealth building, primarily in communities of color in Baltimore City, with a focus on the provision of legal services, education and outreach, and elevating the impact of tangled titles on housing loss.
We have held homeowner clinics throughout Baltimore. Volunteer attorneys help clients determine if they legally own their home and identify legal remedies to ensure they can keep their family home and pass it to their next generation.
Where we are today
Our team has grown from being just one staff attorney to having two staff attorneys and one paralegal. We are excited to be able to support our volunteers better, advocate more at the General Assembly and expand our focus to the eastern shore.
Who we serve
Our mission is to provide free legal services to lower-income clients, especially related to ensuring legacy homeowners can stay in their home and pass it along seamlessly after they pass away.
To ensure we are able to do that, we limit what services we offer and what clients are eligible.
We prepare estate planning documents and deeds. We help with "small estates." We help with "regular estates" if the only asset is the family home.
See our main website for our current income limits - under Estate Planning and Estate Administration.
We also have limits based on the level of assets owned by the client. If you call, we can determine if you are eligible.
